We all remember legendary circus performer Bobo the Clown (given name–Chester Barnett). Well, Bobo the Clown will be inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame this weekend and you have the chance to meet his daughter, Bonnie, Saturday at CircusWorld. She’ll be signing copies of her new book, Bobo’s Daughter, from 10am until 1pm.
She certainly has an interesting story to tell. From meeting her father for the first time at age 4 to reconnecting with him later in life, Bonnie’s memoir recounts the struggles of growing up as the daughter of a legendary entertainer.
When I was a teenager, I obviously knew everything.
I was positive that there was no value to anything that happened before my time. It wasn’t the first time I’ve been wrong.
I had a girlfriend in high school the loved to emulate Marilyn Monroe. Being a sensitive, new age guy, I couldn’t comprehend why a woman would praise Marilyn. From my understanding, she was a ditzy-blonde who wanted diamonds and perpetuated the ugly stereotype that women aren’t smart.
That led me to a viewing of Some Like It Hot, where Marilyn co-stars with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. SLIH is listed by the American Film Institute as the top comedy of all time. I watched Tony and Jack bounce off each other with Marilyn in the middle ….then I got it.
“Marilyn” was a character. In real life, she was actually a woman in control of her career and herself. Quite progressive for her time.
So to that, I say thanks Tony Curtis for making me laugh and helping learn a valuable lesson.
How many servings of veggies and fruits do you really (really) eat a day? Do you get the two or more fruits and three or four (or more) veggie servings? I kept track yesterday, an average day for me. My three fruits were a banana, a pear and an apple–yeah fruit! My three veggies were red onion (on a sandwich), carrots (raw) and a very small avocado.
Ugh. I know I should do a better job of the fruit/veggie thing. It’ll make me healthier and be a good example for my son. But I feel like sometimes no matter what I do it won’t be good enough for the guidelines!
What about you? How do you add fruits and veggies to your day?
I think it’s got to be a tough job being the Commander In Chief. So, I’d like to take this time to thank The President for what he’s done for me today.
I barely had to do any work this morning with the news or traffic, because just about everything has to do with the President coming to town. Ahhhh. That makes my job so easy. Thank you Mr. President for also telling student reporters yesterday that you used to come up to Madison after college to have “fun times,” then not elaborating.
That left my mind to wonder what the fun times could be. Then I thought about the fun times I had in college and afterwards. I also choose not to elaborate on them.
To show my thanks and for making my job easier, here’s a wonderful video about Presidential Fun Facts. Hail To The Chief.
Between the President in town this week, and The World Dairy Expo at The Alliant; there’s one more ‘Welcome to Madison’ I need to mention:
WELCOME BACK KEN MERSON!
One of my best friends in the world, the Godfather of my kids – and believe it or don’t, this is the THIRD station we’re worked together! From Baltimore to Memphis and now Madison, The Merson Person has been a hard act to follow across three cities now…:-)
Actually, we keep getting kicked out or declared ‘persona non grata’ but we’ll not go there today…:-)
And as long as we’re bringing all the Heavy Hitters to town, let me add one more to the list. Since Celebrity Apprentice winner Joan Rivers is coming to The Overture anyway – perhaps she could bring Donald Trump (and that creature living atop his head)…Seems there are red tape issues keeping a certain Sexting D.A. still employed (and no, not to be confused with the movie; “The Shaggy DA”…although this DA wants to ‘shag’…:-)…so perhaps THE DON could do the honors with a quick, nasally ‘You’re Fired’ and boy-howdy; PROBLEM SOLVED!
And the problem of boring mid day radio is SOLVED with my buddy Ken Merson, back to grace the airwaves.
Alright Ken…there’s your propaganda…I’ll send you my bill (or maybe TEXT you!!!…:-)
Ahhhh, the arrival of our favorite Monday of the year–Packers vs. Bears on Monday Night Football. I know they’re both undefeated now but tomorrow only the Packers will be! High hopes for Aaron and the boys especially since I have Bears fans coming out of the facebook woodwork. Friends that I had no idea were Bears fans have changed their profile picture to reflect Bears-related nonsense. Go figure!
Since I expect us to win, should we play the “Packer Polka” tomorrow morning at 7:45? Leave a comment below, call us in the morning (281-1949) or tell us on facebook–search WOLX!
I gotta say if there was ever a case for one state to overtake another, it’s Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.
I spent the weekend in Escanaba for a friend’s wedding. Even though the time zone changed and they said I crossed a state line, I still felt like I was in Wisconsin. People were wearing Packers and Badgers gear everywhere. People were nice. The small town had the same small town quaintness.
The Michigan State Trooper that pulled me over was even kind. Yeah, maybe I was going 65 in a 55, but he let me go with a warning and that was a real stand up thing to do. I think I like you Michigan.
If your thing is watching the endless stock ticker cross the screen on CNBC, then by all means head out to watch Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. That’s not my thing, which is why this movie felt more like a depressing reenactment of just how sucky and greedy some people can be, and have been lately.
The sleepy Shia LaBeouf leads a seemingly strong cast including Josh Brolin, Carey Mulligan and Michael Douglas in the continuing story of Oliver Stone’s 1980’s classic about greed and money. Both elements are still here, but Stone’s second venture into the world of Gordon Gekko fails to capture the essence.
Jake (LaBeouf) is a hot investment broker about to marry Gekko’s daughter. After being released from prison for insider trading Gekko seems to be plotting a comeback. On the brink of the worldwide global disaster, they plot a plan together.
Their backdrop is the banking giants manipulating the federal government for bailout money. It didn’t make me want to stand up and shout for morality and financial regulation (which I think is part of the message here.) It just made me more upset that we as a country got to that point.
In one scene, an average Jane Doe asks Gekko to define a “moral hazard.” He symbolically brushes her off before answering; it’s when somebody does something with your money that you don’t want them to. That should have been the homerun dialogue line just like “greed is good” was, but instead we get a bank robbed again.
Also, listening to two hours of banking terminology, no matter how dramatic it can be just bores me to death. I know it’s a serious issue, but I want to sit and hear about derivatives, bursting bubbles and moral hazards like I want a hole in the head.
This has Oliver Stone’s feel to it with conspiracies and power and money grubbing characters. It just should have been a better follow up. Stone making an appearance twice in his own film as an unnecessary character was more than unnecessary. Besides, what we really want to see is an evil power and money hungry Gekko. Instead, he’s in search of redemption for all the family time lost in the pokey.
One real turn off was Gekko (Douglas) making reference to how bad cancer is. Considering Douglas’ recent announcement that he’s actually battling cancer, it made the scene feel cheap, shameless and self involved. Is it really OK to exploit your own health problems to sell a couple extra to the show? It made my stomach churn.
