By comparison, today's monsoon is delightful
I am an admitted sun-aholic. Bright sunshine makes and inordinate positive impact on my psyche and well-being. When it's gone for more than a day or two, look out. That said, you would think that today would be a bad day for me. Another morning of fog followed by a monsoon. Nice. Despite that, it's actually a pretty [...]

First cookout tonight? Charlie Shortino says "yes"
Normally, on a rainy morning in March like today, I would not think, "hey, maybe I'll fire up the grill tonight!" In fact, I'm pretty sure it's been at least 5 1/2 months since I last did just that so, obviously,  it's not yet returned as a regular part of my thoughts. However, Charlie Shortino pointed out to [...]

Is This Really A Big Deal?
I don't mean to be insensitive to Farrah Fawcett, her family or any teen boy whose ever got "romantic" with her pin up, but is all this protest really necessary? Some seem to be up in arms that Farrah was not included in the "In Memoriam" section of the Oscars on Sunday. So the question is: did [...]

Dear Mom: I did something...
... you might have warned me not to do as a kid. Or maybe not.On Saturday, the day of sunshine and 40 degrees, I was itching to get my bike out of the garage and to go for a ride. So, out it came with a flat tire I swear it didn't have the last time I [...]

Alice In Wonderland
Rated PG – 1h48 -It looks like Alice, but it’ missing some of the heart and some of the wonder. The film tries to make up for a lesser story with great visuals. This didn’t feel like Alice In Wonderland should have felt.In Tim Burton’s version, Alice is a teenager. Faced with [...]

I bought a new set of headphones over the weekend, which happens often enough. Working in radio I go through headphones like the Vikings go through quarterbacks. And whenver I buy new headphones I become enraged (well, sort of).

We’ve all heard for years how universally hated the clam-shell packaging is that comes on most hard goods these days. It’s a massive pain in the butt to open and isn’t doing mother earth any good either.

What I didn’t know until today is that there is a name for the I-will-kill emotion that overcomes us when we can’t quite get the d*#@ thing open. It’s called “wrap-rage.” So there.

But the best thing I learned was that there is a common tool in most kitchen drawers that works reasonably well at opening the clear plastic, thereby forestalling a full-blown case of wrap-rage. Check out the video.

jimmy_buffett-1351Tomorrow is the big Jimmy Buffett concert.

One of the rules written the Parrothead constitution is the more the merrier.  Thus, if you don’t have tickets to the show tomorrow, I know how you can get a pair without paying insane ticket broker surcharges.  Head over to Cheeseburger In Paradise in Greenway Station from 5-7 tonight, where Fletch will have one last pair to giveaway.

But back to the theme of this week’s blogging.  Top Fives of  Jimmy Buffett.

Today is the list of Top Five Jimmy Buffett Songs that I try to emulate in my life or songs that already describe me.  (Heck, we even look a little alike)

5.  Rag Top Day
4.  Boat Drinks
3.  He Went To Paris
2. One Particular Harbor

Yeah!  My son Sam came cruisin’ home yesterday (on the Lake Express no less).  He thought it was pretty cool to do something neither his dad nor myself has ever done.  But apparently he did turn a tad green early in the ride.

He tried to give me the eye-roll-teenage-shrugging-of-the-shoulder thing when I saw him step off the boat.  By the time he walked to me, though, he had a big grin and let me lift him up in my arms.  Sweet, sweet boy.

If you were inside the Milwaukee Arena, author Ted Schaar would like to speak with you.

September 4, 1964 was Beatles Day in Milwaukee as the Fab Four made their only Wisconsin concert appearance. Writer Ted Schaar called me today to say that he is about to publish an account of that event,  but needs to add one finishing touch before it’s done: he needs to interview someone from Madison who attended that concert.

If you live in or near Madison, and saw the one-and-only Wisconsin Beatles concert, please shoot an e-mail to Ted, ted@schaarcommunications.com .

You know you were part of that Beatles story on that September day in 1964. Now you might end up being a part of Ted’s story today, on the eve of Beatles Day 2009.

09/09/09 looms. Beatles day. The day the music will be re-born with the release of all the Beatles albums in remastered form.

Cool as that might be, it should be pointed out that the Beatles music has already been “re-mastered” by others, not the least of whom was the Muppets.

Masterful…
